  • Text Formatting:
    1. To make a line break either hit the return key once (as in a word processing program), or use a
      line break,
which will put one hard return following the text:
      <br>

    2. To make paragraph breaks either hit the return key twice (as in a word processing program), or use a

      paragraph break,

which will put two hard returns following the text:
      <p>

    3. To right align text, the code is:

now is the time for all good men . . .

    5. To make a table*, the code is:
      row 1, column 1 | row 1, column 2 | row 1, column 3
      row 2, column 2 | row 2, column 2 | row 2, column 3

      <table>
      <tr><td>row 1, column 1</td><td>row 1, column 2</td><td>row 1, column 3</td></tr>
      <tr><td>row 2, column 2</td><td>row 2, column 2</td><td>row 2, column 3</td></tr>

(*Note, divider between columns ("|") is shown here only to make readability of example table easier.)

      <ul><li>

Always begin the line to be bulleted, with <li>

To put a paragraph break within a bullet point, use one of the following:
      - hit the return key (as in a word processing program)

  • Hiding Spoiler Text:
To hide text for spoilers and have it work for any page setup, there are a variety of codes to use:
(Note: Highlight coloured text to read explanation of how each code works. If you would prefer using other colours, please visit this website for a list of the various hexadecimal colour codes available.)

    1. <div style="background:#000000"><font style="color:#000000">insert text here
This will make the text and background black for an entire paragraph worth of space, and force a paragraph break, even where one isn't wanted. For example, only part of this sentence needs to be blacked out,
but a random paragraph return has been forced on the text following it, even though it's part of the same sentence.

    2. <span style="color: #ffffff; background-color: #ffffff:">insert text here
This code makes the text white and the background it appears on white. Note: Colour shown here is shown as pale blue only so that you'll be able to see it well enough to highlight this. White background/white text are very easy to overlook since most people's default background is likely white.

    3. <span style="color: #000000; background-color: #000000;">insert text here
This code makes the text black and the background it appears on black.

    4. (<a title="Skip this Warning" href="#skip">skip) <span title="Spoiler text. Highlight to read." style="color:#000000;background-color:#000000;">insert text here. Highlight to read.<a name="skip">
(skip) This code is used to provide blind, visually impaired and/or anyone using an OCR the ability to avoid being spoiled. Their OCR will come to the word "skip", and give them the option of highlighting the information, or instead skipping over it. The words "highlight to read" should be included in the spoiler text.
  • Fan Fiction Header for Posting Fic on Journaling Sites:
Many communities have different requirements for what should be listed as header information. The header below is a distillation from various communities. Obviously, not all information will be necessary, depending on where fic is being posted; this is presented in a tabular form for a reader's convenience.

    Fandom: Insert fandom here
    Title: "Insert story title here"
    Author: Insert author's name here
Genre: Usually defined as Gen, Het or Slash; may also be further broken down into subcategories, depending on fandom
Rating: Insert age appropriateness of story
Spoilers: As different readers may have discovered a fandom at different points in its history, it's best to err on the side of caution and provide notice that the story may reveal information that would spoil a reader's enjoyment of the original source material
Summary: Usually a sentence or two providing the reader with a basic outline of the story
Warning: Considered different from "spoilers", warnings are used to alert readers that the fic may contain disturbing or triggering content
Length: Insert approximate length here (eg. Drabble, Short Story, Multi-Chapter, Novella, Novel)
Status: Insert whether the story is complete or a work in progress (WiP)
Disclaimers: Insert your acknowledgement as the writer of the story of the entities that own the original source material
Notes: If you have any author's notes to reference, it's best to place them in the header rather than in the middle of a story
Other: Insert other information, notes, miscellanea, as required

(Note: Due to site owners wanting reciprocal revenue from ads, "No follow" is not allowed on every website, and may result in an error message when trying to use it.)

      3. <a href="http://anonym.to?insert url here">link name
This opens a link within the current window without providing the site owner with information on where you came from.

      4. <a href="http://anonym.to?insert url here" rel="nofollow">link name

This opens a link in a new window or tab, without providing the site owner with hits or giving them information on where you came from.

    • HTML Help Requests:
      1. To add additional interests beyond the allotted 150 on your LJ profile page:

        • Please note the following:

          1. This is a cheat added to your profile; it does not affect your interest list.

          2. Because this is a cheat, anyone searching for LJ members with these interests will not see your name pop-up on their interest list. This will only allow the person who is using this cheat on their profile to find other members having their interests.

          3. Because this is a cheat, you will need to be responsible for knowing the number of interests you're adding, as well as making sure you sort them in alphabetical order. Unlike with the LJ interest list, this is not done automatically.

          4. If your interest has multiple words in it, the words will be separated by an addition sign (+) in the url. So, wild wild west becomes: wild+wild+west.

Additional information can be found via a Google search for html character entities.
